Business Insurance

Business Owner's Policy (BOP)

Property and liability coverage bundled into one policy, usually priced better than buying each separately. The right starting point for most storefronts, offices, and small operations.

What it covers

  • General liability protection bundled in (third-party injury and property damage)
  • Commercial property coverage for your building, contents, and equipment
  • Business interruption coverage for lost income during a covered shutdown
  • Often includes basic crime and equipment breakdown coverage
  • Typically priced lower than buying general liability and property separately

What it doesn't cover

  • Workers' Compensation (required separately once you have employees)
  • Commercial auto for company vehicles
  • Professional errors or negligence in the services you provide
  • Very large or specialized properties, which may need standalone commercial property coverage

Who needs this

Most small and mid-sized businesses with a physical location, a limited number of employees, and moderate revenue. If you run a retail shop, small office, restaurant, or similar operation, a BOP is usually the most efficient way to get your core coverage in place.

From our horror stories

The Policy That Was Never a BOP

A business owner thought their landlord's insurance covered their contents. It didn't, and neither did the general liability-only policy they'd bought thinking it was broader than it was.

Common questions

Business Owner's Policy FAQ

Is a BOP the same as General Liability?

No. General Liability is one piece of a BOP. A BOP bundles GL together with commercial property coverage, usually at a better combined rate than buying each on its own.

Can I add other coverage on top of a BOP?

Yes. Workers' Comp, commercial auto, cyber liability, and other lines are typically added alongside a BOP as your business needs grow.

Is my business too big or too specialized for a BOP?

Some larger or higher-risk operations need standalone commercial property and liability policies instead. We'll tell you honestly if a BOP isn't the right fit rather than force it.
